FAQs
Where is Market Common?
The Market Common is an 114-acre lifestyle “urban center” in Myrtle Beach, SC built on the site of the former Myrtle Beach Air Force Base. It opened in 2008 and features a mix of shopping, dining, entertainment, and residences in a walkable, downtown-like atmosphere. The Market Common is part of the larger Market Common District which is situated in the area bordered by the Myrtle Beach Airport, Kings Highway, the Rt 17 Bypass, and the southern city limits.
Why is it called Market Common?
The official name of the downtown business district is The Market Common. (Note: It is called THE Market Common NOT The Market Commons!) The Market Common was named by the original developer of the site, McCaffrey Development, based on a similar project in Arlington, VA called Market Common. Both Market Common in Arlington and The Market Common in Myrtle Beach, were designed by Antunovich Architects.
How many people live in Market Common?
More than 10,000 people live in Market Common, making it the largest neighborhood in Myrtle Beach.
Why was the Market Common Civic Organization formed?
MCCO began with the idea that the largest neighborhood in Myrtle Beach, with over 25% of the population should have a stronger voice. The issues that matter to us should matter to the elected officials who represent us and the city administrators who work for us. We were formed to represent the interest of the residents, businesses, and public institutions of the greater Market Common community. Our mission is to enhance the Market Common as a desirable community to live, work, and visit.
Who represents Market Common?
The city of Myrtle Beach has a council-manager form of government. The mayor sits as a council member-at-large and presides over meetings of the city council. The six council members are elected by the entire city and do not represent specific districts, such as Market Common. The city manager is responsible for the administration and the day-to-day operation of all municipal services and city departments.
What are the “BIG” issues in Market Common?
Although there are many issues of interests to our members, there is broad agreement that 1) Market Common needs and deserves an indoor swimming pool, 2) Howard Parkway should be extended to Emory Road near 17 Bypass to reduce traffic on Farrow Parkway (the main thoroughfare through Market Common) and speed the dispatch of emergency vehicles to the Summit and Meridian neighborhoods, and 3) the annual streetlight assessment that property owners pay for “upgraded” streetlights should be elimiated.
